Optivo for Shopify: Turn Anonymous Store Visitors Into Consented Customers

Shopify only holds records for people who have bought, signed up or created an account. This guide explains how Optivo reaches other visitors, and how opt-ins update marketing consent in Shopify.

Optivo for Shopify: Turn Anonymous Store Visitors Into Consented Customers

Shopify visitor identification through Optivo, by esbconnect, finds 10-30% of anonymous store visitors and emails them encouraging them to sign up to your newsletter or back to site to purchase.

It’s GDPR and PECR compliant and those who opt-in to your brand, through a frictionless opt-in in email, then their Shopify marketing consent status is updated via API so they’re ready for use, from whatever you send from.

What is Shopify visitor identification, and how does Optivo do it?

Shopify holds your customer records and whilst it can see who is visiting your site, it only holds a customer record for those that have opted in previously. This means it has no way to identify the anonymous majority who visit your site, but may  have never visited before or have, but who have not opted in to your brand. These are consumers who browse, add to basket (without adding their email), or view a product and leave without ever becoming a customer record at all and never have been. Optivo’s tag sits on your Shopify storefront and identifies a portion of that anonymous traffic against a permissioned email graph, enabling you to retarget site visitors, not on your CRM by email. Optivo, never your business, sends the retargeting email, acting as sender of record under its own consent chain throughout, this part works whether or not you connect anything to Shopify at all. This means your domain health if always intact.

Where it differs from an ESP integration: Shopify isn’t itself an email platform, it’s your store and your customer data. So where you provide Optivo with Shopify Admin API access, instead of creating a contact inside a marketing tool, Optivo updates the matching customer record’s email marketing consent state directly inside Shopify.

When Optivo see a consumer on your site, and matches them to opted in record in their email community, they will email them encouraging them to either opt-in to your brand or back to site to purchase. If they opt-in, via API , the status of that consumer records will be created and updated.

That means an opted-in visitor shows up as a marketing-consented customer in your own store data, ready for Shopify Email if that’s what you use, or for sync into whichever ESP you’ve connected to your Shopify store, including Ometria, Braze, Bloomreach, Dotdigital or Klaviyo if you’re running one of those alongside this page’s own integration.

Does Shopify need to be given API access for this to work?

Only if you want the consent status written into Shopify automatically. This is a connection you authorise with your own store credentials, not something that happens by default. Without it, Optivo still identifies and emails anonymous visitors under its own consent chain, the API connection simply keeps your own Shopify customer data current with who has opted in, so you don’t have to reconcile it manually.

Why can’t Shopify identify anonymous visitors on its own?

Shopify’s customer records are built from checkout, account creation, and marketing signup, all of which require the visitor to already be interacting as a known person. Anonymous visitor identification requires a pixel that identifies someone before any of that happens, and this is exactly where PECR compliance becomes the deciding factor between tools. See our full breakdown of how PECR applies to anonymous visitor identification for the specific regulations and ICO guidance involved. In short, Optivo operates as sender of record under its own consent chain, so your business never holds or emails a list of matched identities directly.

In detail this is how it works:

1. Tag placed on website

2. Consumer consents on CMP

3. Tag reads information about them and matches them to one of 17m consumers on the Optivo email community.

4. If there is a match and they are not on your suppression file, Optivo emails them under the explicit consent they hold for the individual.

5. They receive up to 3 emails unless they purchase or opt-in to you directly.

What results should a UK Shopify store expect?

Two figures matter here, and we would rather understate them than oversell: typical match rates run 10-30% of qualifying anonymous traffic, and campaigns built on those matches have delivered 4-18x ROAS across live UK ecommerce accounts. Both figures move with traffic quality, basket value, and how tightly the retargeting message is targeted to the browsing behaviour that triggered it.

Metric Typical range What drives it
Match rate 10-30% Traffic volume, sector, browsing depth per session
ROAS 4-18x Basket value, message relevance, send timing

Across esbconnect’s live UK ecommerce accounts, results in this range are typical rather than exceptional. Match rate and ROAS both depend heavily on traffic volume and basket value, which is why we have given you a range rather than a single headline number.

Match rates will also depends on the volume of consumers you wish to suppress, this can either be all records you hold or just your active customer based.

Suppression can be managed via an API, via the tag on site or through secure s3 bucket.

How does the Shopify connection work day-to-day?

Optivo’s tag runs on your storefront and identifies and emails anonymous visitors continuously, independent of any connection to Shopify. Where API credentials are in place, each new opted-in visitor’s Shopify customer record is updated to reflect marketing consent as they convert, and Optivo checks a customer’s existing marketing consent state in Shopify before every send so anyone already marked unsubscribed there is excluded automatically. Your existing customer records and any ESP you sync from Shopify continue exactly as they are, this process only adds newly recovered, opted-in customers to that pool.

Is this compliant alongside our existing GDPR obligations for Shopify customer data?

Your existing UK GDPR obligations around the customer data already inside Shopify are unaffected. Optivo only updates marketing consent status via the API connection you authorise, and reads existing consent state to avoid duplicate targeting.

The compliance question specific to anonymous visitor identification sits under GDPR and relies on a consumer accepting consent on your onsite CMP. If they do, we then have the necessary consent to read information about them and match them to a consumer in our database

Consent for us to them mail them is managed under PECR and GDPR.

All data user by Optivo, is opted in under www.opt-me-in.com to receive marketing emails under opt-me-in from brands. We provide examples of the emails they receive, the brands we work with and on opt-in they receive a welcome journey, which includes a dedicated email about Optivo and the value it brings to them
